Review By American Rifleman:

While Ned H. Roberts, who figured in the development of several cartridges used today, and gave his name to the .257 Roberts, was alert to every development in the firearms field, Schuetzen rifles remained his first love, and he wrote frequently of them, both for Hunting and Fishing, of which he was gun editor, and for the American Rifleman. Gerald O. Kelver, former secretary of the American Single Shot Association, who corresponded frequently with Roberts during the later years of his life, has gathered into a slim, 99-page volume, Roberts' writings on the single-shot breechloading rifles used in target shooting from about 1880 to 1910.

The book is a generous tribute to the author but it is also an excellent account of single-shot rifles. Not only does it explain the manner in which their loading and firing at 200 yards offhand in match target competition, but it contains information about some of the men who came to prominence in the manufacture and shooting of them - F.J. Rabbeth, Harry M. Pope, A. O. Zischang, George C. Schoyen, W. M. Farrow, A. O. Niedner, and others. Among the rifles discussed in the book are the Ballard, Bullard, Remington-Ryder, Sharps, Maynard, Stevens, Stevens-Pope.

A good bit of target shooting history is also contained in this little book, which explains so well the schuetzen game as it was practiced years ago and gives detailed information on loads, bullets, lubricants, and accessories used in it. Anyone who is interested in learning every aspect of the target game using these fine single-shot arms of yesterday, which were the object of so many sportsmen and shooters, should obtain this book, both for the information contained in it and the spirit which pervades the writing. - J. A. Harper.
