Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was president, rock 'n' roll was king, and hula hoops, "I Love Lucy," and ponytails were "cool." It was the 1950s an era in which the American dream was becoming a reality for many of the post-war generation. As in earlier decades, a number of Americans were turning to Sears catalogs to replenish family wardrobes. But now, a rapidly growing middle class was selecting affordable apparel that rivaled the latest clothing styles worn in New York and Paris.

This splendidly detailed volume, comprised of 120 fully illustrated and captioned pages of Sears catalogs from the 1950s, provides an entertaining and comprehensive view of what men, women, and children were wearing in that decade. Included are one-piece, strapless bathing suits; denim skirts and checkered blouses, dresses with plunging necklines, and shoes with stiletto heels for women; snap-brim hats, wing-tip shoes, and business suits with wide lapels and equally wide ties for men; blue jeans, plaid shirts, and full, knee-length swing skirts for girls; fringed cowboy outfits for both genders, and much more.

JoAnne Olian, former curator of the costume collection at the Museum of the City of New York, has written a fascinating introduction that lends a historical perspective by providing social commentary on how fashion mirrored the changing times.

Accompanied by fact-filled captions that provide colors, sizes, and prices, these illustrations will delight fans of the fifties and be of great value to fashion historians.

Original Dover (2002) selection of pages from Sears Catalogs, 1950-1959. Introduction. Over 300 black-and-white illustrations.
