In 1894, engineer and amateur rodsmith Edward R. Austin presented a paper to the Manchester Anglers' Association, his hometown angler's club. In it, he presented his ideas for constructing a 'hybrid' bamboo fly rod -- one that balanced the best aspects of the American fly rod (lightness) and the British build style (strength). This was later deemed 'the Manchester Method.' This collection reprints the complete text and images of Austin's original manuscript, supplemented with some early history of fishing around Manchester by Col. J.I. Mawson, J.A. Hutton, and John Moscrop (of fishing reel fame) -- all members, like Austin, of the Manchester Anglers' Association. It's a neat piece of bamboo fly rod history rescued from the dustbin of history. It includes a foreword and appreciation of the Manchester build style by Dr. Todd E.A. Larson.
