Table of Contents

Between 1976 and 1981, Gene Hochman published The Encyclopedia of American Playing Cards in four parts, a complete cataloguing of American makers and their types and brands of playing cards.

This new volume includes all entries from the original work and hundreds of new listings, detailing all decks known to the authors from the origins of playing card manufacturing in America in the late 1700s to the early 1930s. It covers both standard cards, those designed for everyday use, as well as non-standard decks designed for a variety of commemorative and utilitarian purposes. The card entries are grouped by manufacturer, and the encyclopedia provides important historical information about these companies, descriptions of all of their brands, as well as pictures of the key cards for each listing. A special 24-page color insert brings to life the original quality and beauty of many outstanding cards.
