The Frontier, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Indian Wars; 1851-1880. With color plates

This is the second volume of a four-volume work. In Volume I the author delineates the uniforms, arms, accoutrements, and equipment of the period from 1776 to 1850. In this volume he addresses himself to the eventful, bloody, tragic mid-nineteenth century. Here he describes the dress and equipment of the horse soldier of the early frontier, the Mexican War, the Civil War, and the wars with the Indians. The uniforms, insignia, decorations, arms, and horse gear are described and profusely illustrated in color plates and black-and-white drawings. For his models the author used actual uniforms and equipment and consulted government documents.

"The same high standard of editing, artistry, and scholarship of the first volume mark this second of a projected [published in 1979] four-volume series." Choice.

"The word definitive is all too often used in describing historical publications and reference works. But, for the time, Randy Steffen's The Horse Soldier is indeed a definitive reference. Artists, museum curators, collectors, writers, historians, and exhibit preparers concerned about the historical accuracy relative to the uniforms, arms, and equipment of the United States Cavalry will find these volumes indispensable." Colorado Magazine.

"The Horse Soldier ranks as one of the finest verbal and pictorial records of military men yet produced a classic the moment it left the press." Military History of Texas and the Southwest.
