The 1st SS Panzer Division by Herbert Walther
The 1st SS Panzer Division by Herbert Walther
A photo chronicle of the LAH in over 300 photos including formation and campaigns throughout WWII.
More than forty years after the war's end there still prevails in broad circles of the population, fostered by much of the media, a negative opinion of the nature and service of the Waffen-SS in World War II. In the ensuing years, to be sure, many opinions have been expressed, even in Israel and many other lands, from which it can be seen that other people are beginning to understand the difference between the gray-uniformed soldiers of the Waffen-SS, the black SS and the SD. It has also become known slowly to critics and opponents that the Waffen-SS was a fighting force like the divisions of the army, the squadrons of the air force, the units of the navy, and nothing else. Millions of soldiers who stood on the eastern front against Russia during the war, still remember today that they slept better in their trenches and positions when they knew they had a unit of the Waffen-SS as neighbors.
This new book portrays the divisions of the Waffen-SS in pictures and text, and is an impressive documentation: from the formation of the LAH, the hard fighting and high casualties it caused this division, to the end and surrender of the LAH in Hungary and Austria, the volume is in fact like a diary in pictures.
Here begins a story about the Waffen-SS that is intended to set right many false impressions and media judgements, and do away with prejudices.
