John Vogt's transcription of the Charlotte County, Virginia 1810 Census, from the original images.
Illustrations, map, index.
This is the first surviving census for Charlotte, since both the 1790 and 1800 censuses have been lost. The manuscript is transcribed in its original rough alphabetic form, except for the final six folios which are random. Also, the occasional out-of-place name appears in the manuscript. For this reason a complete index is provided. Charlotte was an important Southside county with a heavy slave population, and the census record covers 1024 households. Many of the early families later migrated westward into the Piedmont and beyond.
This and other 1810 censuses are transcribed by the author from the original images, and while many of Virginia's censuses are available online, they oftentimes are replete with misreadings. Caveat emptor!
